HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Villa Lante.

The Renaissance garden survives largely as designed, with its terraced fountains, the Fountain of the Moors, and the two symmetrical casinos, the Palazzina Gambara and the Palazzina Montalto, retaining much of their original stonework and layout. The property is in Italian state ownership and is protected as a national monument. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis, with the garden's upper terraces sometimes accessible only by guided visit.

About Villa Lante

Villa Lante was built in the 1560s and 1570s at Bagnaia for Cardinal Gianfrancesco Gambara, on the site of an earlier hunting lodge of the bishops of Viterbo. Its design, often attributed to the architect Vignola, centers on a mannerist water garden with fountains, terraces, and cascades. The villa became an influential example of Italian Renaissance garden design.
