HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Villa Jovis & Palazzo di Tiberio (Tiberius's Villa).
Villa Jovis survives as extensive but fragmentary ruins of Tiberius's clifftop imperial villa, including cistern structures, terraces, and wall foundations, with no significant reconstruction, while much of the original superstructure has been lost. The site is under the authority of the Italian Ministry of Culture. It lies in open ground and is freely accessible to visitors who make the walk up from Capri town.
About Villa Jovis & Palazzo di Tiberio (Tiberius's Villa)
Villa Jovis was built on the northeastern heights of Capri in the early first century CE as the largest of the villas of the Roman emperor Tiberius. From about 27 CE, Tiberius governed the empire from this retreat, indulging in seclusion and scandal chronicled by ancient historians. It exemplified the private power of Rome's early emperors.
