HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Vieste.
Vieste preserves a compact historic center of whitewashed stone houses and narrow lanes, a Romanesque cathedral, and a hilltop castle of Swabian and Aragonese construction, though the castle itself is not generally open to the public. The old town is managed by the municipality, while the castle remains in use as a military facility. The historic quarter is freely accessible, with the cathedral open as an active place of worship.
About Vieste
Vieste occupied a defensible headland on the Gargano promontory in Apulia, an area inhabited by the ancient Daunian people before Roman conquest. Its natural harbor made it a point of contact for Adriatic trade in antiquity. In the medieval period the town grew into a fortified port under Norman and later Swabian rule, valued for its coastal defenses.
