HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Vienne.

The site preserves a Roman theater cut into the hillside, the well-preserved Corinthian temple of Augustus and Livia, remains of the Cybele sanctuary, and a pyramid-shaped obelisk from the Roman circus. The monuments are classified historic monuments in French state or municipal ownership and are managed locally by the city of Vienne. The Roman remains are open to the public, generally on a ticketed basis for the theater and associated museum areas.

About Vienne

Vienne began as the capital of the Allobroges, a Gallic people, before becoming a Roman colony under Augustus in the first century BCE. It grew into a major provincial city with a forum, theater, and the Temple of Augustus and Livia, reflecting its importance in Roman Gaul. Vienne later became an early Christian bishopric and a leading Rhone valley city.
