HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Vicenza's Teatro Olimpico & Palladian Basilica.
The Teatro Olimpico retains Andrea Palladio's original wooden auditorium and stage, including Vincenzo Scamozzi's permanent trompe l'oeil street-scene backdrops, making it the oldest surviving indoor theater of its kind, while the adjoining Basilica Palladiana preserves its Renaissance loggias wrapped around an older medieval hall. Both buildings are owned by the Comune di Vicenza and form part of the Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto World Heritage Site. The theater is open to visitors on a ticketed basis and the Basilica's public spaces are generally accessible, with occasional closures for events.
About Vicenza's Teatro Olimpico & Palladian Basilica
Andrea Palladio designed the Teatro Olimpico in the 1580s as Europe's first permanent indoor theater, completed after his death by Vincenzo Scamozzi with a famous trompe-l'oeil street set. Palladio also reclad Vicenza's medieval town hall, later called the Basilica Palladiana, with classical arcaded loggias. Both works established Vicenza as a showcase of Renaissance architectural theory.
