The Valley of the Queens preserves numerous rock-cut tombs, most famously the richly painted tomb of Nefertari, along with dozens of other decorated and undecorated tombs of queens, princes, and officials, all original ancient excavations rather than reconstructions, though many wall paintings have suffered salt damage and fading. It is managed by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities as part of the Theban Necropolis World Heritage Site. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis, with the Nefertari tomb requiring a separate special ticket and limited visitor numbers.
About Valley of the Queens
The Valley of the Queens served as a royal necropolis in Upper Egypt during the New Kingdom, burying queens, princes, and other royals. Its most celebrated tomb belongs to Nefertari, principal wife of Ramesses II, renowned for its painted decoration. The valley functioned as a companion burial ground to the nearby Valley of the Kings for several centuries.
