HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Utica Archaeological Site.
The site preserves excavated Punic and Roman remains including house foundations, mosaic pavements, a basilica, and burial areas, consisting of original in-ground ruins rather than reconstructed structures. It is managed by the Tunisian Institut National du Patrimoine as a protected archaeological site. It is open to the public as a ticketed outdoor site with an associated small museum.
About Utica Archaeological Site
Utica was founded as a Phoenician trading colony on the North African coast, traditionally dated to around the twelfth century BCE. It allied with Rome during the Punic Wars and, after Carthage's destruction in 146 BCE, briefly served as capital of the new Roman province of Africa. It remained a significant Roman port city in the following centuries.
