HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Unfinished Obelisk.
The site preserves a single massive granite obelisk left partially carved and still attached on three sides to its bedrock, abandoned in antiquity after cracks appeared in the stone, along with the surrounding ancient granite quarry workings from which numerous other monuments were cut. It is administered by Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Unfinished Obelisk
The Unfinished Obelisk was begun in the granite quarries of Aswan during Egypt's New Kingdom, traditionally associated with Queen Hatshepsut, as part of the ancient practice of carving monolithic obelisks for temple precincts. Workers abandoned it after cracks appeared in the stone during carving. Had it been completed, it would have been the largest obelisk ever quarried.
