HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Uffington White Horse, Oxfordshire.

The Uffington White Horse survives as a stylized figure cut into the chalk hillside during the Bronze Age, its trenches periodically rechalked and re scoured over the centuries rather than retaining any original chalk surface, and it lies near the earthwork ramparts of Uffington Castle hillfort. The site is owned and managed by the National Trust. It stands in open downland and is freely accessible to the public.

About Uffington White Horse, Oxfordshire

The Uffington White Horse was cut into the chalk downs of Berkshire during the Bronze Age, near the end of the second millennium BCE. It lay beneath the Iron Age hillfort of Uffington Castle and required periodic re-scouring by local communities to stay visible. Its hilltop setting and abstract form suggested a role in ritual or tribal identity.
