HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Tzintzuntzan Archaeological Zone & Franciscan Convent.

The archaeological zone preserves the stone platforms and rounded yácatas of the Tarascan capital along with sections of ceremonial plazas, while the adjoining sixteenth century Franciscan convent of Santa Ana retains its church, cloister, and huatápera, with the yácatas' upper adobe superstructures largely lost to time. The archaeological zone is managed by Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, and the convent remains under the Catholic Church. Both are open to the public, the ruins as an accessible archaeological site and the convent as an active place of worship.

About Tzintzuntzan Archaeological Zone & Franciscan Convent

Tzintzuntzan was the capital of the Purepecha empire from the fifteenth century, its stepped yacata platforms used for temples and royal burials above Lake Patzcuaro. After the Spanish conquest, Franciscan friars established a convent and church on part of the site in the sixteenth century. The city thus shifted from an indigenous imperial capital to an early colonial mission center.
