Tusculum was an ancient Latin city and one of the first towns to receive Roman citizenship, remaining important in Latium. Wealthy Romans, including the orator Cicero, built villas in its countryside as a retreat from the capital. The town later gave its name to a medieval countship before being destroyed by rival Romans in the twelfth century.
