What survives is the brick and concrete core of a monumental fountain structure associated with the ancient aqueducts feeding this part of Rome, once faced with marble and statuary that have since been lost, standing within Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. It lies in the care of the city of Rome. The ruin stands in a public park and is freely accessible and visible at all times.
About Trofei di Mario (Nymphaeum), Rome
The Trofei di Mario was built in the early third century under Emperor Severus Alexander as a monumental nymphaeum marking the terminus of an aqueduct on Rome's Esquiline Hill. Its sculpted trophies were later, and incorrectly, associated with the general Gaius Marius, giving the site its popular name. The fountain celebrated the emperor's expansion of Rome's water supply.
