The colonial town preserves its cobblestone streets, tiled-roof mansions, and churches around the Plaza Mayor, while the adjoining Valle de los Ingenios retains ruined sugar mills, worker barracks, and the Manaca Iznaga tower among former plantation estates. Cuban national heritage authorities and municipal government oversee the ensemble, designated a World Heritage Site. The town is freely open to visitors, with individual house museums accessible on a ticketed basis.
About Trinidad and the Valle de los Ingenios
Spanish colonists founded Trinidad on Cuba's south coast in the early sixteenth century as a base for gold prospecting and trade. The nearby Valle de los Ingenios developed from the eighteenth century as a center of sugar production, worked by thousands of enslaved Africans on its plantations and mills. Together they formed the Caribbean's wealthiest sugar region.
