HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Torre del Oro.
The tower preserves its original twelve-sided Almohad-era base along the Guadalquivir riverbank, with a narrower upper section and cupola added in later centuries. It is owned by the city of Seville and now houses a small naval museum, and the tower is a Bien de Interés Cultural, one of Spain's highest heritage designations. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Torre del Oro
The Almohad rulers of Seville built the Torre del Oro in the early thirteenth century as a watchtower guarding the Guadalquivir River. A chain once stretched from it to a matching tower across the water to block enemy ships from reaching the port. The tower later served as a prison, a chapel, and a maritime archive.
