HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Toniná Archaeological Zone.
What survives is the great stepped acropolis built into the hillside, one of the tallest pyramidal structures of the Maya world, along with palace platforms, a ballcourt, and sculpted stucco friezes, some restored or reconstructed during excavation. The site is managed by Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia as a protected archaeological zone. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis, with an on-site museum displaying sculpture recovered from the ruins.
About Toniná Archaeological Zone
Tonina was a Maya city-state that flourished during the Late Classic period as a major power in the western Maya lowlands. In 711 it captured K'an Joy Chitam II, the ruler of its rival Palenque, an event commemorated in its sculpture. The city later recorded one of the last dated monuments of Classic Maya civilization, around the early tenth century.
