HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Tombs of the Nobles.

The site preserves numerous rock-cut tomb chapels carved into the hillside, decorated with original painted wall reliefs depicting the tomb owners and daily life scenes, with facades and interiors surviving in varying states of preservation. It is managed by Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities as part of the Theban Necropolis, itself within the Ancient Thebes World Heritage Site. Access is by ticket, with individual tombs opened on a rotating basis and some requiring separate tickets.

About Tombs of the Nobles

Egyptian officials of the New Kingdom carved private tombs into the hillside at Sheikh Abd el-Qurna, beginning around the sixteenth century BCE. Unlike royal tombs, these were decorated with painted scenes of daily life, farming, and feasting rather than religious texts. They served as burial places and funerary chapels for the Theban elite serving the pharaohs.
