HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Tocra (ancient Taucheira).

Ruins at Tocra include sections of the ancient city walls, remnants of Hellenistic and Roman-period structures, and an extensive necropolis that has yielded important early Greek pottery finds, though little of the standing architecture survives above foundation level. The site falls under the authority of Libya's national antiquities administration. It exists largely as ruins in open ground, accessible to visitors under general antiquities protections rather than as a developed visitor site.

About Tocra (ancient Taucheira)

Greek settlers from Cyrene founded Taucheira, modern Tocra, in the sixth century BCE as one of the cities of the Cyrenaican Pentapolis on the coast of North Africa. The city minted its own coinage and traded across the eastern Mediterranean. It later passed under Ptolemaic and then Roman rule as part of the province of Cyrenaica.
