HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Titchfield Abbey, Hampshire.
The site preserves the ruined walls and foundations of the medieval abbey church and cloister, along with the imposing Tudor gatehouse the Wriothesley family drove through the former nave when converting the abbey into Place House. It is a scheduled monument in the guardianship of English Heritage. The ruins stand in open ground and are freely accessible to visitors.
About Titchfield Abbey, Hampshire
Titchfield Abbey was founded in 1222 by Peter des Roches, Bishop of Winchester, for Premonstratensian canons. After its dissolution in 1537 it was converted into a Tudor mansion, Place House, by Thomas Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton. The mansion later belonged to his descendants, patrons of William Shakespeare, and exemplified the conversion of monastic property into private estates after the Reformation.
