HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Tintern Abbey.
The abbey survives as a roofless ruin, with the walls and tracery of its great church, including the soaring east window, largely intact alongside fragments of the cloister and monastic buildings. It is in the care of Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic environment service, as a scheduled monument. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Tintern Abbey
Tintern Abbey was founded in 1131 by Walter de Clare as a Cistercian monastery on the banks of the River Wye. It was the second Cistercian house founded in Britain and became a wealthy center of monastic life and agriculture. The abbey was dissolved in 1536 under Henry VIII and later inspired Romantic poets and painters.
