Three artillery batteries on these hills guarded a mountain pass within the West Point defensive system from 1776 through 1783. West Point's importance came from its command of the Hudson River, the principal corridor between New York City and the interior. American commanders feared that British control of the river could divide New England from the other states. Batteries on heights, river forts, patrols, signal stations, and the great chain across the Hudson created overlapping obstacles. These guns helped protect approaches that an enemy might use to bypass the main river defenses.
