Thomas Carney, a free African American, served for years in the Maryland Line. He endured Valley Forge and fought from Brandywine through the southern campaigns, reportedly rescuing wounded Captain Perry Benson at Ninety Six. The marker honors the substantial but often overlooked service of Black soldiers in the Continental Army.

Carney enlisted in the 5th Maryland Regiment and later served in units of the Maryland Line as it fought in northern and southern theaters. Black soldiers served beside white Continentals despite changing enlistment policies and a society structured by racial inequality. At Ninety Six in 1781, tradition credits Carney with carrying the wounded Benson from danger. He received a pension and lived into the nineteenth century.
