The Theatre of Marcellus preserves its lower two tiers of the original curved travertine and tufa facade largely intact, with the upper portion long since converted into a Renaissance palazzo that still incorporates apartments above the ancient structure. The ancient remains fall under Italy's Ministry of Culture and the city of Rome's archaeological authorities, while the palazzo levels remain privately owned residences. The exterior is freely visible from the surrounding streets, with the ancient theater itself not generally open for interior visits.
About Theatre of Marcellus, Rome
Emperor Augustus completed the Theatre of Marcellus in Rome around 13 BCE, dedicating it to his nephew Marcellus, who had died young. It hosted dramatic performances and public spectacles and served as an architectural model for later Roman theaters, including the Colosseum. In the medieval period it was converted into a fortress and later a Renaissance palace.
