About The Nancy Lea Bell
The bell was cast in copper and tin by the Meneely Foundry of New York and given to Independence Baptist Church in 1856. Nancy Moffette Lea donated it in gratitude for the religious conversion of her son-in-law, Sam Houston, first president of the Republic of Texas. It broke in a fall from the belfry in 1969.
