HISTORIC PRESERVATION at The Lost Gardens of Heligan.
The walled kitchen gardens, glasshouses, pleasure grounds, and the subtropical Jungle valley survive, largely as a late twentieth century restoration of gardens that had fallen derelict and overgrown for decades. The gardens are operated by a private charitable trust associated with the Tremayne family estate. They are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About The Lost Gardens of Heligan
The Tremayne family developed the estate gardens at Heligan from the late eighteenth century, expanding them through the Victorian era with exotic plantings and walled kitchen gardens. The estate employed many gardeners who tended pineapple pits and pleasure grounds for the family. Most of the garden staff were killed in the First World War, and the gardens then lay neglected.
