About Thapsus Battlefield, near Ras Dimas
In 46 BCE, forces led by Julius Caesar defeated the Pompeian and Numidian army of Metellus Scipio and King Juba I near Thapsus during Rome's civil war. The defeat led Cato the Younger to take his own life soon afterward at nearby Utica rather than submit to Caesar. The battle effectively ended organized Pompeian resistance in North Africa.
