Built between 1854 and 1856 and first occupied by Governor Elisha M. Pease, the Texas Governor's Mansion has functioned continuously since that date as the official residence of every Texas governor, making it one of the oldest continuously occupied executive residences in the United States. Its everyday function is dual: it serves as the private family home of the sitting governor and, simultaneously, as a working venue for the business of the state, hosting official receptions, ceremonial functions, dinners for visiting dignitaries, bill signings, and other state functions on its ground floor while the family occupies private quarters above. Over its history the mansion has been repeatedly modernized to keep pace with this dual residential-and-civic role, gaining gas lighting in the 1870s, indoor plumbing and telephone service in the 1880s, electricity in the 1890s, and expanded kitchen and dining facilities in the early twentieth century, along with a major structural restoration in 1979-82 after an arson fire threat and general wear prompted a full renovation. The mansion was designated a Texas Historic Landmark in 1962, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, and later recognized as a National Historic Landmark, reflecting its unbroken use as a seat of gubernatorial life and state hospitality. Today it remains in active use, still the working home and reception space of the governor and first family, with docent-led public tours offered when the mansion is not in official use, and its care supported by the nonprofit Friends of the Governor's Mansion.
