Prospectors began staking cinnabar, or mercury ore, claims in the rugged Terlingua district in the early 1890s, drawn by surface deposits in the Big Bend region, laying the groundwork for the major quicksilver mining boom that would follow in the early 20th century under the Chisos Mining Company.
