HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Tepozteco.

The site preserves a small stone pyramid dedicated to the pulque god Tepoztécatl, standing atop a steep mountain above Tepoztlán with its platform and staircase surviving as excavated original Postclassic masonry. It is administered by Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia as a protected archaeological zone within the Parque Nacional El Tepozteco. Reaching the pyramid requires a strenuous hike, after which entry is ticketed.

About Tepozteco

Nahua builders raised this hilltop temple above Tepoztlan in the fifteenth century, during the late Aztec period. It was dedicated to Tepoztecatl, a god associated with pulque, the fermented maguey drink. The shrine formed part of a wider Aztec religious network linking mountain sanctuaries across central Mexico.
