HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Templo y Ex-Convento de Santo Domingo de Guzmán.

The complex preserves the Baroque church of Santo Domingo with its heavily gilded stucco interior, including the Rosary Chapel, along with the adjoining former Dominican convent buildings and cloisters. The church remains an active place of worship under the Catholic Archdiocese of Antequera-Oaxaca, while the convent portion is managed by Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia as the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca. The church is freely accessible and the museum section is open on a ticketed basis.

About Templo y Ex-Convento de Santo Domingo de Guzmán

The Templo y Ex-Convento de Santo Domingo de Guzmán was built by Dominican friars from the sixteenth century as a monastery and church in Oaxaca. Construction continued into the seventeenth century, producing a richly gilded Baroque interior with elaborate stucco ornamentation. The complex served as a center of Dominican evangelization in colonial Oaxaca for more than two centuries.
