It remains associated with the Franciscan order and is also protected under Mexican federal heritage law. The church functions as an active place of worship, while parts of the former convent are open to visitors.

About Templo y Ex-Convento de la Santa Cruz, Querétaro

The Templo y Ex-Convento de la Santa Cruz was founded by Franciscan friars in Querétaro in the sixteenth century, on the site of a battle between Spaniards and Otomi and Chichimeca peoples. Tradition holds a luminous cross appeared during the fighting, inspiring the name. The convent later became a missionary college training Franciscans sent across northern New Spain.
