The hillside town preserves its colonial era street plan and whitewashed, red tile roofed buildings, centered on the Baroque parish church of Santa Prisca, whose carved pink stone facade, twin towers, and gilded interior altarpieces survive largely as built. The historic center is protected as a national monument zone under Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History, and the church remains an active parish. The town is freely accessible, while the church interior is open to visitors outside of services.
About Taxco de Alarcón & Templo de Santa Prisca
Taxco developed as a silver mining town in colonial New Spain, and the Templo de Santa Prisca was built between 1751 and 1758 at the expense of mining magnate Jose de la Borda. The church's lavish Churrigueresque facade and interior reflected the fortune Borda made from local silver veins. It became renowned as a masterpiece of colonial Baroque art.
