HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Tarsus, Turkey.

Modern Tarsus overlies its ancient predecessor, and visible ancient remains are limited, consisting mainly of scattered excavated fragments and traces such as the so called Cleopatra's Gate area, since much of the classical city lies buried beneath the present town. The site and its excavated areas fall under the authority of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The accessible remains are freely visitable as open sites within the modern city.

About Tarsus, Turkey

Tarsus was an ancient city in Cilicia on the Anatolian coast, a center of Hellenistic learning that became capital of the Roman province of Cilicia. It was the birthplace of the apostle Paul and, decades earlier, the site of Cleopatra's celebrated meeting with Mark Antony. It remained a major crossroads of trade between Anatolia and the Levant.
