On October 3, 1781, British cavalry under Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton clashed at the Hook with French cavalry commanded by the duc de Lauzun and supporting Virginia militia under Brigadier General George Weedon. In the mounted action Lauzun and Tarleton reportedly came into close personal contact before the British withdrew to Gloucester Point. French and American forces then contained the British north of the York River, preventing them from rescuing or reinforcing Cornwallis at Yorktown.

Here, at the Hook, Tarleton, commanding the cavalry of Cornwallis's army, fought an action with Choisy's French force and Virginia militia, October 3, 1781. The Duke de Lauzun's cavalry charged Tarleton, who retired to Gloucester Point. There he was blockaded by the French and by Virginia militia.
