The island preserves traditional stone terracing, footpaths, and archaeological remains from pre-Inca and Inca occupation, alongside a living community whose textile traditions are recognized as an element of intangible cultural heritage. It is governed collectively by the local Quechua speaking community under Peruvian municipal authority rather than a single heritage agency. The island is freely accessible to visitors arriving by boat from Puno.
About Taquile Island
Taquile Island in Lake Titicaca was inhabited from around the second century BCE by the Pukara culture, later coming under Inca control after the fifteenth century. The island's terraced hillsides and stone structures date largely to this Inca period of agricultural and ceremonial use. Taquile became known for a textile tradition in which islanders wove garments encoding social status.
