HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Sweetwater Creek State Park (New Manchester Mill ruins).
The park preserves the roofless stone walls and foundations of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company cotton mill, burned during the Civil War, standing along the creek amid the surrounding woodland. It is owned and operated by the State of Georgia as a state park within the Georgia state parks system. The mill ruins are freely accessible via a hiking trail through the park.
About Sweetwater Creek State Park (New Manchester Mill ruins)
Investors built the New Manchester Manufacturing Company's cotton mill on Sweetwater Creek in the 1840s and 1850s to spin and weave textiles using water power. Union cavalry burned the mill in 1864 during the Atlanta campaign, and soldiers deported its mostly female workforce northward as prisoners. Its destruction exemplified Union targeting of Confederate industry.
