The site preserves the substantial roofless red sandstone ruins of the Cistercian abbey church, including its walls, tower, and window tracery, though the monastic domestic buildings have largely disappeared. It is cared for by Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled monument. The ruins stand in open ground in the village and are freely accessible to visitors.
About Sweetheart Abbey
Sweetheart Abbey was founded in 1273 by Dervorguilla of Galloway as a Cistercian monastery in memory of her late husband, John Balliol. She was buried there with his embalmed heart, giving the abbey its name. It served as a center of Cistercian monastic life in southwest Scotland until the Reformation brought monastic life there to an end.
