HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Susita (Hippos), above the Sea of Galilee.

Susita preserves the ruins of a Roman and Byzantine city on a hilltop above the Sea of Galilee, including a colonnaded main street, the remains of several churches, a basilica, and sections of the city wall and gates. It is managed by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority as part of Sussita National Park. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Susita (Hippos), above the Sea of Galilee

Hippos, known as Susita, was founded as a Hellenistic city in the second century BCE on a plateau overlooking the Sea of Galilee. It later became a prosperous member of the Roman Decapolis and grew into a Byzantine Christian center with several churches. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in the eighth century, ending centuries of settlement.
