HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Sultan Hassan Mosque-Madrasa.
The complex retains its massive limestone walls, monumental entrance portal, four vaulted iwans used for teaching the four Sunni schools of law, an inner courtyard, and the domed mausoleum of Sultan Hassan, essentially original medieval fabric rather than reconstruction. It is maintained by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities as a protected Islamic monument. The mosque remains an active place of worship and is open to visitors for a ticketed entry.
About Sultan Hassan Mosque-Madrasa
The Sultan Hassan complex was built under the Mamluk sultan Hassan in the fourteenth century as a mosque and madrasa serving all four Sunni schools of law. Construction was interrupted by the sultan's assassination and disputed over completion, though the complex was largely finished under his successors. It became one of the largest religious teaching complexes in medieval Cairo.
