HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Sukur Cultural Landscape.
The Sukur landscape preserves the hilltop palace of the Hidi, the chief, along with terraced stone-walled fields, iron-smelting sites, and a scattered village of traditional stone and thatch dwellings across the Mandara mountain landscape. It is recognized as a World Heritage cultural landscape with local traditional authority alongside Nigerian heritage bodies involved in its stewardship. The site is in a remote rural area and accessible to visitors, generally without formal ticketing.
About Sukur Cultural Landscape
Sukur developed as a hilltop kingdom in the Mandara Mountains, its terraced fields, stone-walled compounds, and the Hidi's palace taking shape by around the sixteenth century. The community built its economy on iron smelting and long-distance trade in iron goods across the region. Its architecture and terraces reflected an African tradition of engineering the landscape for kingship and craft.
