HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Strokestown Park House.
The Palladian style house survives largely intact, retaining much of its original furnishings, decorative plasterwork, and period features, along with its walled garden, stableyard, and outbuildings, and now also incorporates a famine museum. It is managed by the Irish Heritage Trust, a charitable conservation organization. The house, garden, and grounds are open to the public on a ticketed, guided tour basis.
About Strokestown Park House
Strokestown Park House was built in the first half of the eighteenth century as the Palladian-style seat of the Mahon family, Anglo-Irish landed gentry. During the Great Famine, landlord Denis Mahon carried out mass evictions of tenants and was assassinated in 1847 amid the unrest that followed. The estate exemplified landlord and tenant tensions in Ireland.
