HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Stratonikeia, Muğla province.

City walls, a gymnasium, a theater, a bouleuterion, and numerous rock cut tombs survive across the site, which uniquely overlaps the still inhabited village of Eskihisar. It is protected and administered by Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism as an archaeological site. The ruins lie in open ground and are accessible to visitors on a ticketed basis.

About Stratonikeia, Muğla province

The Seleucid king Antiochus I founded Stratonikeia in the third century BCE, naming it for his wife Stratonice, on an earlier Carian settlement. The city later passed to Rhodian and then Roman control, flourishing as a center of marble quarrying and monumental building. Its inscriptions, including numerous gladiator contracts, became an important source on Roman provincial life.
