Peach Point was an active plantation established in 1832 near the Brazos River in what is now Brazoria County, settled and operated by James Franklin Perry and his wife Emily Austin Perry, Stephen F. Austin's sister. Austin himself regarded Peach Point as his only real home in Texas, staying there between his political and diplomatic duties, though the working plantation was run day to day by the Perry family and the enslaved laborers who cultivated its fields. When Austin died in West Columbia in December 1836, shortly after Texas won independence and while he was serving as the Republic's first secretary of state, his body was carried down the Brazos River aboard the steamboat Yellow Stone and buried in the small family cemetery on the Peach Point grounds, functioning at that time as a private family burial plot rather than a public memorial. Austin's remains stayed at Peach Point for more than seven decades until 1910, when the State of Texas had them exhumed and reinterred with a formal monument at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, converting his gravesite from a family plot into a state memorial. The original Peach Point burial ground remains on what is now private land in Brazoria County, marked today chiefly by a historical marker noting its former role as Austin's first resting place; the old plantation house was destroyed by an early-1900s hurricane, and the surrounding acreage has continued in private and agricultural use, with the family cemetery preserved as a small marked site rather than an active public destination.
