Below the piazza survive substantial underground remains of the ancient stadium's substructure, including brick vaulted arcades and portions of the seating foundations that dictated the elongated shape of Piazza Navona above. The site is managed by the municipal authorities of Rome as an archaeological museum. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis, with access by way of a small entrance on the piazza.

The Emperor Domitian built a stadium in Rome around 86 CE to host Greek-style athletic contests, including the Capitoline Games, modeled on the stadiums of the Greek world. It was one of the few permanent stone stadiums in the city and could hold tens of thousands of spectators. Its elongated footprint later shaped the plan of Piazza Navona.
