HISTORIC PRESERVATION at St. Nicholas Abbey.
The great house survives as an original Jacobean-style stone mansion dating to the mid seventeenth century, one of only a small number of such houses standing in the Western Hemisphere, along with its surrounding sugar estate buildings and gardens. It is privately owned and operated as a working estate and museum rather than by a government heritage body. The house, gardens, and rum distillery are open to the public on a ticketed basis, including guided tours.
About St. Nicholas Abbey
St. Nicholas Abbey was built in the mid seventeenth century as the great house of a sugar plantation in Barbados. The estate relied on enslaved African labor to grow and process sugarcane into sugar and rum for export. Its Jacobean-style architecture made it one of very few great houses of that style built in the English Caribbean, reflecting planter wealth.
