St. Mary's Catholic Church has functioned since the mid-1850s as the religious, social, and cultural anchor of Praha, a small farming community in Fayette County settled largely by Czech immigrants who named the site after the city of Prague. As with many rural Texas parishes, the church served not only as a place of worship but as the organizing center of community life, hosting baptisms, weddings, funerals, and the annual patronal celebrations that structured the agricultural calendar for its immigrant congregation. The present church building, completed in the 1890s, is renowned for its elaborately painted interior, stenciled and hand-decorated by an itinerant European-trained artist in a style imitating stone vaulting and Gothic ornamentation, a hallmark of the so-called Painted Churches of Texas built by Czech and German Catholic communities. A memorial in the churchyard honors local men lost in World War II, underscoring the parish's continuing role as the community's memorial and gathering space. St. Mary's remains an active Catholic parish today, holding regular services for the surrounding farm community, but it also functions as a significant heritage tourism destination, drawing thousands of visitors annually, many of them descendants of Czech settlers, who come to view the painted interior and experience a well-preserved example of Texas's Czech immigrant religious architecture.
