HISTORIC PRESERVATION at St. John's Co-Cathedral.
The co-cathedral preserves its plain fortified exterior and richly decorated Baroque interior, including a marble inlaid floor of knights' tombstones, side chapels of the Order's langues, and paintings by Caravaggio held in its oratory. It is administered by the cathedral's own foundation under the Archdiocese of Malta, and stands within the Valletta World Heritage Site. It functions as an active place of worship and is open to visitors on a ticketed basis.
About St. John's Co-Cathedral
St. John's Co-Cathedral was built in the late sixteenth century as the conventual church of the Knights of Malta, the Catholic military order that governed the islands. Construction was completed around 1577 under the design of Girolamo Cassar. The church served as the spiritual center of the Order and later held works of Baroque art, including a Caravaggio.
