HISTORIC PRESERVATION at St. George's Caye.
The caye retains a small historic cemetery and scattered remains of colonial-era structures associated with its early settlement as Belize's first capital, though little of its original built fabric survives above ground. It falls under the heritage jurisdiction of Belize's National Institute of Culture and History. The island is accessible only by boat and its grounds are generally open to visitors.
About St. George's Caye
English and Scottish logwood cutters known as the Baymen settled St. George's Caye off the coast of what became Belize during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It served as capital of the British settlement before Belize City assumed that role. In 1798, Baymen forces repelled a Spanish naval expedition nearby, commemorated as a founding national event.
