About St Thomas Church

Johann Sebastian Bach’s remains rest in the chancel of Leipzig’s St Thomas Church, where he served as cantor from 1723 until his death in 1750.

The active Lutheran parish maintains the church, Bach’s grave and its musical heritage. Restoration work in 1997–2000 renewed much of the historic building.

History happened here at St Thomas Church

St Thomas Church developed from a medieval foundation and acquired its late Gothic form in the fifteenth century.

Bach served the church and Leipzig’s schools as Thomaskantor from 1723 to 1750. His remains were brought to St Thomas after World War II; the grave was dedicated in 1950.
