About St Peter's Church, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland

St Peter's Church was founded in 674 as part of a Benedictine monastery established by Benedict Biscop on the River Wear. The young Bede began his monastic life there before transferring to the sister house at Jarrow. The twin monastery became a renowned center of learning and manuscript production in early medieval Northumbria.
