It is a Church of England parish church associated with the Venerable Bede. The church remains an active place of worship and is generally open to visitors.

About St Paul's Church, Jarrow, Tyne and Wear

St Paul's Church was founded in 681 or 685 as part of the twin monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow, established under the Northumbrian abbot Benedict Biscop. It was the home of the Venerable Bede, who lived and wrote much of his scholarship there, including his Ecclesiastical History. The monastery became a leading center of learning in Anglo-Saxon England.
